Upcoming Contests and Notifications

  • Lyndon House Full House Show is now up. These are pieces created by the guilds that call the Lyndon House home. Many members have work in this show.
  • OCAF Members Show is now up. These are pieces by the members of OCAF in Watkinsville. Many members have work in this show.
  • Members’ Photo ShowsKennth Storey at the Botanical Gardens and Ben Slaboda at Give Back Realty, 624 South Milledge Avenue, Suite 101.
  • VOLUNTEER(S) NEEDED: We now need one or more people to take over the following APG jobs: 1) Newsletter Production and Mail Chimp mail list. Involves adding new members to the Mail Chimp email list, gathering the images and info from the speakers, creating the email newsletter, and creating an occasional extra email. It also involves sending a welcome email to new members, which is set up to copy and paste.  2) In-meeting computer person. Tim currently uses his own computer but the Lyndon House also has a pc in that room that can be used. They promised that the projector would work plug-and-play from now on so that shouldn’t be an issue. Involves gathering the challenge images that are sent in to APG’s gmail account, getting to the meeting early to set up the computer, gathering images from member’s as they come in, making sure the presenter’s slide show is working, and advancing the images during the photo challenge show. Key for both positions is timeliness and availability.

  • Photo Walk: Waterfalls, Sunset, and Astro Photography
    Date: November 4th–5th
    NEW TIME: Leaving the Epps Bridge Kroger parking lot at 10:00 AM. Meet at the far side of the Kroger parking lot adjacent to the cigar shop (5 Points Cigar Shop and Lounge on the other end of the Larry’s Giant Subs building). It’s probably best to drive a few cars.
    ****We will not get back to Athens until approximately 3:15 AM
    Location: Highlands/Cashiers area – North Carolina
    Agenda: We will photograph several waterfalls in the Highlands area then photograph the sunset at sunset rock in Highlands. We will have dinner in Highlands then travel to Cashiers to photograph the Milky Way at Silver Run Falls (Silver Run Rd, Cashiers, NC 28717)
    Note: the Milky Way is best around midnight so we will be back super late.
    *****For those who can’t come all day, you can meet us at Sunset rock. Sunset is 6:36 PM. Ravenel Park Road, 35.04687, -83.18714, Highlands, NC.

  • 43rd Juried Exhibition – The Lyndon House. Guest Juror, Wassan Al-Khudhairi, Chief Curator at Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis
    Submission Days: Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26, 2018. Start preparing now as there is always a crush at the printers and framers in town. More info to come.
  • APG member Wade Sheldon has 5 coastal landscape prints in the show Warm Days, Cool Nights, a 4-artist exhibition hosted by Classic Galleries at The Classic Center in downtown Athens. The show was curated by the Lyndon House, and will run from June 4 to November 12, 2017. A closing reception will be held prior to the Classic Center Cultural Arts Foundation dinner on November 7, 2017 (invitation only).
  • Someone is looking for a wedding photographer for 6 hrs in Monroe on Feb. 24th. Budget is low so looking for a starter. Contact us at the email below.
  • We are looking for someone to take over setting up the dessert social. We’ll provide the money for the drinks and goodies. You just have to buy them and get them there on time. If two people would like to do it together then that is all the better. Please don’t be shy.

  • There will not be a Lickskillet Artists Market this year due to scheduling conflicts. Lickskillet will resume next year and hopefully be better than ever.
  • Hummingbird Trail Walk: Saturday, August 19, from 8-10 am. During the first hour, Judy will guide you through the Hummingbird Trail to find where the hummingbirds feed and perch throughout the Garden. The second hour will be for you to independently view and photograph the hummingbirds. Judy will be available during this time for help/questions.
    Where: The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Meet in the parking lot near the outside restroom.
    What to bring: Please dress for the hot weather, bring comfortable shoes, hat, water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, photography gear and/or binoculars: camera, several batteries (if you have them), your longest lens, SD card(s), tripod (if desired), and a lot of patience.
    Details: You must have signed the waiver on your APG membership form to attend. Judy will have forms for you to sign if you have not signed one yet. Hummingbird trail maps will be provided.
    If there is a threat of rain that day, you can text Judy at 706-340-7161 after 7:00 a.m. that morning, and she can let you know if the event is still on.

  • 2017 NG3C Shootout: Join the Georgia Nature Photography Association (GNPA) to participate in this annual shootout on Sept. 16th in Chattanooga. “I think everyone who has been  involved in previous shootouts agree that it is a great opportunity for you and other GNPA photographers to have a really fun day, build teamwork and camaraderie, and challenge you to be a better photographer by having to think fast on your feet, be creative, and improve your post processing skills.…GNPA has hosted this event in the past and has won 1st place once and 3rd place two times in competition against about 14 other photography clubs in Georgia and Tennessee.”  For more information contact Wade Sheldon.

Upcoming Contests and Notifications
  • April 2017 we will be having a show at the Oconee County Library. Start thinking about what you would like to show now. Depending on the number of paid members submitting work we will be able to show 1-2 pieces each.
  • 2017 Eatonton-Putnam Arts Foundation 8th Annual Photography Contest & Exhibition. Entry fees benefit the Eatonton-Putnam Arts Foundation. All info can be found here. Images will be accepted from Jan 20 – Jan 27, 2017 and can be mailed in. APG members have won top prize in three of the last four years so let’s keep up the good showing.
    DIVISIONS:
    Amateur: Photography is strictly a hobby. Photographers use basic to advanced cameras or image editing software. They do not earn any income from photography based activities. These photographers have not won more than 3 ribbons (1st-4th place) in the 2016 Plaza Arts Center Photo Contest or Best in Show Award in any Plaza Arts Center Photo Contests. Amateurs may enter in the Advanced Division if they choose to.
    Advanced:  Photographers have had additional experience beyond basic amateur photography. They may earn some income from the sale or publication of images and other photography related activities. They may have won a Best in Show Award in any Plaza Arts Center Photo Contests or 4 or more ribbons in the 2016 Plaza Arts Center Photo Contest.
    Junior: Photographers are under 18 years of age at photo submission time. They may enter any photo with no regard to categories. See entry fee information under Entry Instructions.
    Entry: Entries will be accepted Jan 21 – Jan 27. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER JAN 27.  Allow plenty of time for mailed entries to arrive before the deadline or they will not be accepted.
    AWARDS:
    Category Ribbons – Ribbons will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners in each category.
    Best in Show Awards – Best in Show Awards will be presented to Amateur and Advanced Photographers and each will receive ribbons and cash prizes.
    Best in Show Awards:
    Best in Show – $150 cash award and ribbon
    2nd in Show  -$125 cash award and ribbon
    3rd in Show –  $100 cash award and ribbon
