Upcoming Contests and Notifications

  • Lyndon House Full House Show is now up. These are pieces created by the guilds that call the Lyndon House home. Many members have work in this show.
  • OCAF Members Show is now up. These are pieces by the members of OCAF in Watkinsville. Many members have work in this show.
  • Members’ Photo ShowsKennth Storey at the Botanical Gardens and Ben Slaboda at Give Back Realty, 624 South Milledge Avenue, Suite 101.
  • VOLUNTEER(S) NEEDED: We now need one or more people to take over the following APG jobs: 1) Newsletter Production and Mail Chimp mail list. Involves adding new members to the Mail Chimp email list, gathering the images and info from the speakers, creating the email newsletter, and creating an occasional extra email. It also involves sending a welcome email to new members, which is set up to copy and paste.  2) In-meeting computer person. Tim currently uses his own computer but the Lyndon House also has a pc in that room that can be used. They promised that the projector would work plug-and-play from now on so that shouldn’t be an issue. Involves gathering the challenge images that are sent in to APG’s gmail account, getting to the meeting early to set up the computer, gathering images from member’s as they come in, making sure the presenter’s slide show is working, and advancing the images during the photo challenge show. Key for both positions is timeliness and availability.

  • Opening reception for the Lyndon House Juried Show is March 22, 6–8 p.m. All are invited. Congratulations to those who made it in.
  • Opening reception to OCAF Southworks is April 6, 6–9 p.m. All are invited. Congratulations to those who made it in.
  • There is currently a show called Reciprocal at UNG in the far back building that has the book store. Many APG members are in it so if you’re in the area please stop in and have a look. It is a small show so it won’t take long to go through it.

Upcoming Contests and Notifications
  • APG Show at Donderos’ Kitchen on Milledge Ave – this will be up through August. Thank you to those who came out for the opening reception. Please continue to support your fellow members and Donderos’ during this incredible opportunity for us. The food really is excellent and well worthy trying. Please stop by for a meal and mention you’re there to see the show. Congratulations to the members who have already sold prints. Tear down will be Aug. 31 from 3:30–5:00 p.m. If you cannot make please get with another member to remove your photo(s).
  • Paid members will be able to put a photo in the upcoming Full House show at the Lyndon House. More details will be announced in September. Drop off will be October 28 and 29 so please start preparing your image now.
  • Lickskillet will be Oct. 22 this year. Again, this is an opportunity for 2016 paid members to sell their images. APG buys two tables at this event. If you need a full table to yourself then info on purchasing that space can be found here.
  • For those who submitted to the Krimson Kafe show, the hanging will be Sept. 6 at 3:45 p.m.
  • The Athens Academy reception is on August 28 from 1-3 p.m. at Athens Academy’s Myers Gallery. All are invited to the reception. (This is a retrospective show for those who where in our show in 2014.)

Upcoming Contest Notifications
  • OCAF for Everyone: 2016 NATIONAL JURIED ART EXHIBITION Exhibit Dates: April 1 – May 6, 2016 Exhibition Location: OCAF Main Gallery. Entry Fee: $25 OCAF Members/$35 Non-members. Submission Deadline: Accepting applications now through Friday, Feb 12, 2016. More information here.
  • Seventh annual Photography Show and Contest in Eatonton. Entries to the show will be accepted February 29-March 7. The show will be at The Plaza Arts Center and will be open to the public April 2- 8. Please go to www.theplazaartscenter.com for all details and entry information.

    The criteria for judging the photographs will include three major areas.

    1) Technical expertise: exposure, proper color balance, focus and depth of field
    2) Composition: could include strong lines, curves, angles, etc., a good use of foreground and background and an overall pleasing balance to the photo
    3) Interest, impact or impression: Does the image attract the attention of the viewer? This could be from the use of striking color, using a unique subject or lighting effect or any number of things that the photographer brings to the process.

Take the Guesswork out of Printing

This month you’ll learn how to take the guesswork out of printing and having prints made.

Taylor & Crist Jan2016In this meeting you will learn the proper techniques that will allow you to produce the best possible prints of your images. Laura and Carolyn plan to cover sizing, color calibration, and paper selection to fit your image. They’ll also talk about Athens Art Prints, an in-shop and online gallery they are creating to promote Athens artists and their work. APG photographers are invited to sell prints of their images through them with no sales commission. As a bonus they will bring a few examples of photo restoration and editing to show.

Laulea Taylor and Carolyn Crist are co-owners of Pixel & Ink Photo Boutique which opened in the Chase Park warehouse in August. Laulea is the creative mastermind who specializes in photo restoration, photo touchup, and art reproduction. She’s been working with digital editing and in frame shops for more than a decade. Carolyn is the social media and business manager who is also a freelance journalist in Athens. She writes for publications such as Flagpole, Atlanta Magazine and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Bring your notepad. Bring your burning questions. Whether you want to use Pixel and Ink, or print yourself, you will leave with the knowledge to stop guessing and start printing.
